EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIP TO NATIONAL CENTRE FOR ANTARCTIC AND OCEAN RESEARCH
The students of TE Comp and TE IT visited National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research on 18th Feb. 2019 along with the mentors – Siddesh Savant, Sabella Pereira, and Cassandra Fernandes.
Dr. M. V. Ramesh welcomed us to the centre and explained the need for the research centre. The study of the cryosphere i.e. the study of the ice core tells us what the earth has been through and also the future impact on the climate. Antartica is free from contamination. The centre has Ice Core lab facilities and in engaged in multi-disciplinary research activities in the Arctic region, Antartic region and the glaciers in the Himalayas.
Through videos we were introduced to the Indian research stations – Bharati and Maitri. The route to them as well as the work done there. The remote sensing department works on images of Antartica that are captured via satellite and sent to the scientists. The scientists then work on Digital Elevation Models and to classify the terrain of Antartica.
Dr. M. V. Ramesh then took us on a tour to view the Communication Satellites and the campus.
