Session on Automation in Merchant Navy

As part of AARUSH 2025, a guest lecture was organized on 25th September 2025, a special talk was delivered by our esteemed alumnus Mr. Rosario Fernandes, currently serving as a Trainee Electro-Technical Officer at Great Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd. The session was conducted to give students an insightful overview of automation in the Merchant Navy, a field that combines engineering expertise with maritime technology.

Mr. Fernandes began the session by sharing his academic and professional journey. He then moved on to the core of his talk, focusing on the significance of automation in modern shipping operations.

A major highlight of the session was his detailed explanation of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), which are widely used in ships for monitoring and controlling critical processes. He explained how these systems enhance efficiency, ensure safety, and simplify operations on board.

Mr. Fernandes also gave the audience a deep understanding of important shipboard equipment such as boilers and incinerators, along with their automated control systems. He elaborated on how automation helps in the smooth functioning of machinery, reduces human error, and meets stringent international safety standards.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where Mr. Fernandes patiently answered questions, sharing valuable tips and industry experiences. Students gained immense knowledge not only about automation in the Merchant Navy but also about career prospects, work culture, and the challenges of life at sea.

Overall, the talk was highly informative, inspiring, and beneficial, leaving the audience with a broader perspective on engineering applications in the maritime industry. The college expressed gratitude to Mr. Fernandes for taking the time to enlighten future engineers and for strengthening the bond between alumni and the institution.
