A field visit to Drishti Marine, Goa’s premier lifesaving agency, was organized for the Second Year Electronics and Computer Engineering students on 8th April 2024 at Miramar Beach, Panaji. The visit was aimed at offering students firsthand exposure to the intersection of technology, artificial intelligence, and lifesaving operations.
Drishti Marine, appointed by the Government of Goa, operates with a dedicated team of 450 lifesavers covering over 40 beach stretches in Goa and 6 key beaches in Mumbai. During the visit, students were introduced to Drishti’s advanced rescue techniques and equipment, including the use of robotic devices in water rescue operations. The lifesaving team conducted a live rescue demonstration, showcasing how AI-powered technologies and rapid response protocols are used to prevent drowning incidents.
The students also learned about the role of beach marshals, who not only ensure public safety but also assist in tourist management and wildlife emergencies. Special emphasis was given to Drishti’s innovative use of Artificial Intelligence in monitoring beach safety and the upcoming deployment of a trained ‘Paw Squad’—rescue dogs that will aid in life-saving efforts.
The instructors explained how the organization adheres to international safety and training standards, with all lifesavers certified and revalidated annually. With over 8,600 lives saved and a 99% reduction in drowning deaths, Drishti’s operational success left a strong impression on the students.
The field visit not only gave students insight into real-world applications of embedded systems, automation, and AI, but also instilled awareness about public safety, emergency response systems, and technological innovation in critical services.
